Bodywork…

Bodywork

Now the fun really starts, we managed to bulk buy a load of fibreglass as we needed enough to do two full cars and repair Old Number 7 after the off at Silverstone. Although the offer of ultra light incredibly thin fibreglass was offered to us, we decided we would rather carry a couple of extra kilograms to stop the car falling apart after the slightest prang.

As with most fibreglass none of it really fitted as it should, but eventually we got it looking pretty good, good enough for a race car anyway. It was after this that Blaine informed me I would be spending all of my evenings and weekends in the garage with some fine grit wet and dry.

We then etch primed the car to make the paint stick to the fibreglass, then sanded a bit more, then we gave the car a good coat of filler primer. Again we sanded the whole car down ready for the paint.

We decided we would spray the car in our garage at home, after masking up the stripes we waited for a nice warm day and went for it.

I must give many thanks to Blaine, as in my opinion the car looks the nuts. When given the task of spraying a car using “modern Paints” he was very unsure. As before now the only paint he had ever sprayed was old school cellulose paint. But after a couple of panels had been sprayed, he began to quite like the paint.
